South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) provides research and development services to the state government, commercial clients and research partners to help make South Australia’s primary industries and regions internationally competitive and ecologically sustainable. SARDI’s programs are designed to increase the productivity, sustainability and adaptability of the state’s agriculture, food and wine, fisheries and aquaculture and bioscience enterprises, create opportunities for market growth, address barriers to growth and provide applied solutions.

Duties:

The Food Safety and Innovation Science program comprises a broad range of scientific discipline specialists who provide scientific and technical advice to government, industry and the community with respect to key issues associated with the maintenance of market access i.e. food innovation, food safety, quality and integrity through the value chain. The Seafood Sub-program objectives are to protect the health of seafood consumers and enhance Australia’s position as a trusted supplier of seafood.

The Research Scientist (Seafood Food Safety) is accountable to the Seafood Sub-program Leader, Food Safety & Innovation for developing and implementing research programs in the area of seafood food safety, and risk assessment, particularly for chemical contaminants and toxins, and for developing technical submissions for market access. The Research Scientist may be required to work across a number of disciplines, managing food safety-based research projects identified in collaboration with government agencies and industry sectors, in particular within the context of Marine Innovation SA (MISA). A key role for the Research Scientist (Seafood Food Safety) is to develop linkages with tertiary research providers across Australia (e.g. University of Adelaide, University of SA, Flinders University, CSIRO) and with domestic and export food safety regulators (State regulators, Food Standards Australian New Zealand (FSANZ) and the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources (DAWR) Export Branch), as well as SARDI Aquatic Sciences at West Beach and Port Lincoln. The incumbent will also help identify opportunities for scientific papers and will summarise data from projects and prepare scientific articles and extension material. 

Salary: $90,029 - $95,487  

Essential Qualifications:

Post graduate qualifications or equivalent in a research area of toxicology, marine biotoxins, or environmental chemistry with relevance to food safety.

Special Conditions:

Some out of hours work, weekend, public holidays work will be required. Intrastate, interstate and international travel will be required.  A current car driver’s licence is essential.
