The School has a large student body - 1200 medical students, more than 1300 students in postgraduate courses and nearly 1000 students undertaking higher research degrees – and major undergraduate teaching programs in medical and health sciences.

It has an extensive research portfolio, which ranges from the molecular basis of disease to clinical medicine to public health. Research is highly ranked across every competitive measure and is focused around five major themes: cancer; infectious diseases & immunology; neuroscience and mental health; obesity diabetes and cardiovascular diseases; and lifespan. Supporting these themes are major disciplines in basic sciences, clinical medicine and public health.

Through its affiliated hospitals and clinics, members of Sydney Medical School are major providers of high quality healthcare to the people of NSW and in parts of the SE Asian region.

Sydney Medical School comprises seven urban clinical schools and the School of Rural Health in the central west of NSW. The clinical schools are located in the University’s major city teaching hospitals: Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Westmead Hospital, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Nepean Hospital, Concord Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital and Sydney Adventist Hospital. Its School of Rural Health has bases in Dubbo and Orange. In addition to clinical schools, Sydney Medical School has large Schools of Public Health and Medical Sciences, both primarily located on the University’s main Camperdown campus. Research occurs in all schools, in University centres and in a number of major affiliated independent institutes.

The School is consistently ranked among the top medical schools in the world. It was founded in 1856, and is the oldest medical school in Australia.

We are calling for Expressions of Interest for a number of full-time and/or part-time Early Career Development Fellows at Associate Lecturer level for early career academics around the following themes:

• Obesity, Diabetes and Cardio-Vascular Disease
• Cancer
• Neurosciences and Mental Health
• Infectious Diseases and Immunology 
• Lifespan

This is a teaching and research role and as such you will have responsibility for teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level; course coordination and administration; student assessment; and contributing to curriculum development.  You will have the opportunity to develop an independent research program as well as contributing to existing research projects within the school and the wider university. You will also be expected to be involved with higher degree research student supervision.

We are looking for bright and ambitious individuals who have a doctorate awarded within the last five years. You will have previous teaching experience and demonstrated potential to contribute to curriculum development and design, course coordination, and assessment. You must be able to demonstrate an ability to conduct scholarly research and to develop independent research relevant to the school’s priority areas.

Under the Fellowship rules you also must be able to provide verification that you satisfy the following criteria:

• have casual and/or fixed term employment experience totalling at least 12 months in one or more Australian universities over the preceding five years
• have been awarded or have submitted a PhD qualification
• do not hold, or have previously held, any continuing academic appointment in a university.
