About the opportunity 

The Save Sight Institute was established in 1985 and has grown to be one of the top three ophthalmic research institutes in Australia. It is internationally recognised as a centre of innovative research into ophthalmology and as a centre of excellence for clinical research, learning and teaching. Ophthalmology is a highly specialised area of clinical medicine and science and the Save Sight Institute has gathered together a critical mass of clinicians, researchers, equipment and technology which is unique within the University of Sydney.

The Research Assistant will provide support to the Macular Research Group as a member of the Laboratory team. The incumbent will undertake laboratory work including handling small animals, genotyping of transgenic mice, conducting western blots, maintenance of cell lines and primary cell culture, gel electrophoresis and PCR techniques, tissue sectioning and immunohistochemistry. The Research Assistant will also assist team members with animal experiments such as intraperitoneal injections and tissue collection, checking blood glucose levels of diabetic mice and body weight as well as regularly monitoring animal general wellbeing and setting up breeding. It will also assist with monitoring consumables, purchase orders, deliveries and reconciliations.

  • A thorough technical understanding of research in the areas of focus and the ability to undertake research and analysis on specific defined issues
  • Demonstrated experience in animal experiments including knowledge of monitoring and maintaining animal models
  • Extensive experience in conducting and reporting on laboratory research projects
  • An understanding of the relevant aspects of Work Health and Safety Policy
  • Excellent interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.

To be successful in this role, the incumbent will use their previous research experience to assist in the implementation of research projects focusing on retinal disease and ensuring that both laboratory and clinical research outcomes are met within the group.
