About the opportunity 

The University of Sydney's Brain and Mind Centre is a centre for discovery, innovation and integrative research strategies, clinical product development and actions that translate research into improved treatment and disease prevention strategies. The centre is made up of 27 research units, staffed by around 200 researchers and 100 students.

The Project Synergy R&D Group at the Brain and Mind Centre is responsible for scoping, designing, implementing and delivering 10 research trials which aim to develop (and redevelop) the Synergy Platform across different population groups and service settings – including Veterans and Veteran’s families, young people, adults through to healthy ageing and young children. Project Synergy is administered by InnoWell (a strategic partnership between The University of Sydney and PwC) and is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health to the value of $30M over a three-year period (2017-20). It involves a large scale research program focused on technology-enabled mental health service reform for better patient, health professional and service outcomes.

The Clinical Trials Manager will work in partnership with the key project leads, the Scientific Advisor, the Director Research Governance, Design and Analytics and the Director, Clinical and Service Implementation, to lead the development and implementation of clinical trials across the Project Synergy R&D Group. As the successful candidate, you will play a pivotal role in the management, development and promotion of clinical trial activity, providing effective management of clinical trial activities to ensure milestones and deliverables are realised. You will play a role in managing stakeholders and ensuring effective collaboration and teamwork with both internal and external stakeholders.

  • previous experience in a leadership capacity, providing advice and support in all aspects of the clinical trials life cycle
  • thorough knowledge and understanding of protocol development, ethics approvals, ICH-GCP compliance
  • completed postgraduate degree in relevant discipline and extensive relevant training and experience
  • extensive experience in project management including previous experience managing clinical trials
  • experience providing operational leadership at managerial level in a tertiary/medical environment
  • demonstrated technical experience in making decisions and providing guidance on work activity, policy and procedures
  • the ability to make superior level decisions and initiative – working both autonomously and as part of a team
  • strong numeracy skills, including the ability to develop, implement and monitor budgets for multiple projects and trials
  • the ability to exercise tactful judgment in resolving complex problems associated with designated work areas
  • a genuine passion for and interest in mental health research.
