About the opportunity 

Sydney Medical School - Northern is part of the University's Faculty of Medicine, the largest and most comprehensive grouping of health and medical education and research in the Asia Pacific region.  Within the School is an organic network of individuals, research groups and centres that aim to conduct outstanding, high impact research, and participate effectively in professional, governmental and community activities.

The Rheumatology Research division within Sydney Medical School - Northern is part of the partnership between the University and the Royal North Shore Hospital. Our aim is to conduct practice- and policy-relevant epidemiological research, as well as basic research, to improve musculoskeletal health. The Rheumatology Department is devoted to advancing our understanding of the disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system, their diagnosis and treatments.

This position involves the management of clinical trials in musculoskeletal pain. Main function includes clinical trial activities such as development and maintenance of standard operating procedures, assisting with site start-up, monitoring sites to ensure protocol and data management compliance, training staff involved in the trials in the SOPs and clinical trial activities, coordinating the preparation and submission of documents to the ethics and governance committees, and coordinating meetings with various stakeholders involved in the trials. Other activities would include providing assistance and advice regarding participant recruitment and retention strategies.

As the successful applicant, you will also provide project management advice and operational support to project teams, coordinating the implementation and delivery of a broad range of activities and tasks in order to meet established milestones and deliverables. You will be responsible for providing clinical trial management support to multiple work streams, including establishing project teams, developing and implementing project plans and preparing status reports in line with broader project governance requirements. The incumbent will manage multiple work-stream stakeholders and communications, ensuring effective collaboration and teamwork with other project teams and stakeholders across the University.

About you

  • completed tertiary qualifications likely with Honours in health science degree with relevant experience in the management of clinical trials
  • a thorough understanding of human research ethics principles as per ICH-GCP guidelines
  • excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills and a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters
  • demonstrated ability to organise and prioritise work, sometimes under pressure, with competing priorities and sometimes limited supervision
  • financial management experience and literacy, experience managing budgets and controlling income and expenditure
  • extensive experience in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, ethics submissions and grant applications
  • the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking the initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
  • a working understanding and current knowledge of relevant aspects of the Work Health and Safety Policy and relevant legislation (including Safe Laboratory Practices for roles based in Laboratory)
  • knowledge of the Higher Education Research Data Collection and ethics reporting requirements
  • experience and interest in musculoskeletal health will be preferred.
