About the opportunity 

Sydney Medical School at the University of Sydney is Australia’s oldest and largest medical school undertaking teaching and research in health and medicine of international standing. The Discipline of Psychiatry is one such research and teaching unit of the Sydney Medical School.

Based in the Department of Psychiatry at the Royal North Shore Hospital, the research program run by Professor Gin Malhi offers an exciting opportunity to be involved in a wide variety of academic and clinical research.

The Research Assistant will provide administrative services and operational support to the Chief Investigator and their team to coordinate a research trial along with the research activity and requirements for the work area. This includes providing technical support to research projects including screening and recruiting patients, conducting clinical and neuropsychological assessments and providing logistical support to the clinical research work. This includes coordinating grant applications and submissions, performing literature searches, synthesizing findings, preparing compliance reporting and storing data that is collected from research projects for further analysis.

• completed tertiary qualifications in Psychology or related discipline and relevant experience in related field
• excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with sound negotiating and conflict resolution skills
• a demonstrated level of tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters and ability to liaise with health professionals
• the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, taking initiative and exercising sound judgement in resolving matters that may arise as part of normal daily work
• strong problem solving skills and the ability to use initiative and exercise sound judgement and ability to prioritise workload during busy periods
• the demonstrated ability to conduct interviews with research participants
• experience in carrying out scientific literary searches, and preparing literary reviews for further analysis
• advanced skills data analysis, using statistical analysis tools, and reporting on research findings
• experience in a research-intensive clinical environment
• experience working with patients with mood disorders and in developing and working on research projects, including expertise in using research protocols, experimental design, ethics submissions and grant applications will be considered favourably.
