About the opportunity 

Reporting to the Chair in Metabolic Systems Biology, the successful candidate will be responsible for providing technical support in the laboratory including general maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment, routine monitoring of research animals, preparing test samples and experiments, and assisting with carrying out physiological experiments in mice and biochemical experiments from tissues.

  • Has completed relevant training and is certified to work in a laboratory.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, with proven ability to apply theoretical knowledge and techniques to meet the key accountabilities.
  • Ensures laboratory is compliant with Workplace Health and Safety requirements.

Although not essential experience in mass spectrometry would be highly desirable.

About us

The Faculty of Science is one of six faculties operating within the University and includes the Schools of Chemistry, Geosciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Psychology, the Sydney School of Veterinary Science and the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science. The School of Chemistry is a very large research active school comprising over 30 full time academic staff and approximately 100 research staff, 100 research students and 34 technical, professional and administrative staff. It administers and delivers undergraduate teaching for approx. 2500 students.

This position will be administered by the School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) within the

faculty of Science but based in the Charles Perkins Centre. The Charles Perkins Centre aims to ease the burden of obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease by generating collaborative interdisciplinary research and education that translates into real-world solutions. The School of Life and Environmental Sciences (SOLES) is a new School consisting of staff previously in the Schools of Biological Sciences and Molecular Biosciences, the Faculty of Veterinary Science, and the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, and forms part of the Division of Natural Sciences (DNS). The DNS enrolled 6,177 undergraduate students, 1,129 postgraduate students and 1,108 international full fee paying students (u/g and p/g) in 2014. The School has reporting lines to the Dean of each of the three faculties for line management of the Head, and the management of the School should be in liaison with the Division Board.  The creation of SOLES is a major component of the broader Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences (LEES) program designed to significantly improve the quality and efficiency of teaching and build new infrastructure to support and enhance capacity in research and teaching. It is a large School divided into five research and teaching clusters each with its own Chair.
