• Opportunity for an Early Career Researcher to join an established research team investigating alcohol use disorder, comorbidities and effective treatments
• Full-time fixed term up until 31st October 2019 with possibility of a further 12 month renewal
• Base salary $90K - $96K p.a plus superannuation

About the opportunity 

Our team is a multidisciplinary research team with backgrounds in Addiction Medicine, Clinical Psychology, Psychopharmacology and Public Health. Our research investigates the management and treatment of alcohol use disorders and comorbid physical and mental disorders, supported by NHMRC and other competitive sources.

Our work covers a range of areas including interventions (clinical trials of pharmacotherapy, psychosocial interventions), discovery and mechanisms of addictive behaviours (neuroimaging) and translation into practice.

A junior postdoctoral researcher is required to contribute to these projects and/or develop their own research area depending on interest and expertise. The successful candidate will also be required to coordinate the development of the National Guidelines for the Treatment of Alcohol Problems. This is a valuable opportunity to expand your research skills and collaborative network.

Main responsibilities will be to:

• contribute to the development of research projects in the area of alcohol use disorders
• contribute to the development of national treatment guidelines
• review literature
• undertake data collection and analysis.

About you

• contribute to the development of the Alcohol Treatment Guidelines including liaison with multiple stakeholders
• contribute to the development of research projects in the area of alcohol use disorders
• assist other researchers and students with various tasks including data collection and analysis
• prepare and contribute to publications, presentations and reports
• contribute to grant applications
• co-ordinate various administrative tasks associated with research projects.

To succeed in this role you will have:

• a PhD in any field relevant to addiction such as psychology, public health or medicine, or near completion
• strong interest in addiction and mental health
• demonstrated contributions to peer reviewed publications
• clear career goals to develop a nationally competitive research profile.

The successful applicant will be able to collaborate with other groups within the Alcohol team and contribute to research outcomes of the program. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential as is a sound basis in responsible research conduct. The opportunity also exists to contribute to the supervision of research students.

The NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence in Substance Use and Mental Health is co-located in the Discipline of Addiction Medicine at the University of Sydney. The Alcohol Treatment Research team is led by Prof Paul Haber and managed by A/Prof Kirsten Morley. The team works in partnership with several clinical services and stakeholders and is in engaged in numerous research projects, policy and practice. As an integral member of the team, this postdoctoral position will coordinate the development of the alcohol treatment guidelines and work on research projects investigating effective treatments for alcohol use disorder.
