Translational Research Associate/ Research Fellow

  • 12 month part time (0.6FTE) fixed term opportunity, base salary $73K - $123K (pro rata) plus superannuation

About the opportunity 

We are seeking a Research Associate or Research Fellow (Level A or B) who will contribute to achieving the translational research priorities of the T2T3 Evidence into Practice Working Group through the provision of research and administrative support at the direction of the Chair and senior academic staff of the Working Group.

The Translational Research Associate/Fellow will engage in research and scholarly activities appropriate to the overall aims and strategic objectives of the Working Group and Sydney Catalyst. They will help in the development of research concepts and protocols, research grant applications, and initial research activities to support subsequent initiatives. They will also be responsible for facilitating research collaborations between Sydney Catalyst members and collaborating researchers and organisations.

This role will be responsible for:

  • the implementation of current initiatives that drive T2T3 translational cancer research
  • develop and implement specific research proposals
  • prepare discussion papers and reports relevant T2T3 activities for Sydney Catalyst members and other stakeholders, including the Cancer Institute NSW.

Specific activities in relation to independent research will include:

  • developing grant proposals and prepare funding applications
  • preparing submissions and reports for ethics committees and funding bodies
  • facilitating communication/co-ordination with collaborators via email, teleconference and meetings
  • undertaking data preparation, management and analysis
  • presenting, publishing and disseminating results.

About you

  • ideally a PhD degree in medicine or health-related science (i.e. nursing), psychology, public health and/or have prior experience in research
  • experience in implementation science and translational research activities, with particular experience in translating evidence into clinical practice
  • knowledge of oncology practice and research
  • demonstrated ability to work co-operatively with others across multidisciplinary groups on research collaborations, including scientific and medical professionals, junior general staff, external funding bodies, in a university or related setting
  • demonstrated research track record, including ability to publish scholarly papers and research outcomes
  • demonstrated proficiency with common computing programs for: word processing; reference managing; data entry, management and analysis; production of graphs and presentation slides (e.g.  Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Endnote).

In addition to the above, to be considered for a level B appointment, we are looking for candidates who possess:

  • PhD degree in medicine or health-related science (i.e. nursing), psychology, public health and/or have prior experience in research
  • demonstrated experience in project management, especially in the context of collaborative research projects and their associated administrative and budgetary requirements.

Experience in conducting systematic reviews and qualitative research as well as the writing and publishing health-related scientific peer-reviewed manuscripts would also be highly regarded.

About us

University of Sydney’s Sydney Catalyst Translational Cancer Research Office is a centre of excellence with aims to improve cancer health outcomes for people affected by cancer through a translational research program. Sydney Catalyst is a multi-disciplinary/multi-institutional endeavour that brings together outstanding teams of researchers and clinicians from leading NSW institutions with the ability to undertake translational research across the full continuum. Sydney Catalyst is funded by a Translational Cancer Research grant from Cancer Institute NSW, for 5 years from July 2016. Oversight of Sydney Catalyst is the responsibility of the Governing Council, comprised of the Director and five lead investigators from renowned oncology institutions and groups. It is supported by a secretariat and receives advice from an expert Scientific Advisory Committee, with two themed Working Groups playing a more intimate role in planning and conducting specific T1, T2 and T3 research projects and other activities.
