About the opportunity 

The NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre (CTC) is funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council and is a research centre within the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney.

CTC is a leader in the design, conduct, and reporting of large-scale clinical trials in cancer and other diseases. It also researches trial methods and conducts systematic reviews. It is the coordinating centre for 5 of Australia’s leading cooperative oncology trials groups: the Australasian Gastro-Intestinal Trials Group (AGITG), the Australian New Zealand Gynaecological Oncology Group (ANZGOG), the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group (ANZUP), the Australian Lung Cancer Trials Group (ALTG), and the Cooperative Oncology Group for Neuro-oncology (COGNO); and, the statistical centre for the Australian New Zealand Breast Cancer Trials Group (ANZBCTG). These groups are non-profit organisations dedicated to the conduct of national and international trials in their respective areas.

The CTC is offering positions at levels A/B & C/D to commence in 2019. Candidates must be qualified medical doctors with experience and expertise in oncology.

These positions are either full-time or part-time, for a fixed term of 12 months, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees, and with the possibility of further offers of employment. Applicants should be registered or eligible to register with the NSW medical board.

Oncology Clinical Lead positions (Academic C/D) are designed for a dynamic and motivated clinician-researchers with trials expertise and training. Clinical Leads direct and support the CTC’s collaborations with one or more of its partner cancer cooperative groups, supervise clinical research fellows, work with clinical investigators, and support the CTC’s Oncology Trials Operations Staff. Clinical Leads are involved at a high level in all aspects and stages of clinical trial design and conduct. Clinical Leads provide strategic guidance and operational expertise to the groups’ research advisory committees, and play a major role in developing protocols, grant applications, trial reports, and other publications. Clinical Leads are expected to develop and lead clinical trial initiatives and methodological research of their own.

Oncology Clinical Research Fellowship positions (Academic A/B) are designed for individuals keen to develop skills, expertise and careers in cancer clinical trials research. Candidates should have recently completed all or most of their training in a clinical oncologic specialty (surgical, medical or radiation). Past research, publications and presentations are desirable but not essential. Oncology Clinical Research Fellows work with one or more of partner cooperative groups and contribute to their entire program, as required. This may include working with co-investigators, statisticians, data managers and trial coordinators to develop trial concepts, protocols, grant applications, reports, meeting presentations and journal articles. They also provide day to day clinical support adjudicating on eligibility, treatment, and adverse events.  Oncology Clinical Research Fellows participate in research advisory committees, operational executive committees, and other subcommittees of these groups.
