About the opportunity 

We are in a period of exciting and significant investment in our Faculty of Medicine and Health and in order to deliver on the University’s ambitious strategic plan, we are looking for a Manager, Research Development to join the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre based at Camperdown Campus.

The Manager, Research Development is responsible for leading the activities relating to the development of new clinical trials and other research projects across the therapeutic areas. In this role your duties will entail supervising and directing the activities of Research Development Leads, who are responsible for development of new clinical trials and research within one or more therapeutic areas, ensuring compliance with CTC’s Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs.)

Provide high-level strategic and managerial support to the clinical trial development at the CTC. This involves providing strategic and operational support and advice on all aspects of clinical trial development and leading professional development of the Research Development Leads. Leadership responsibilities will also include training team members, evaluating staff performance and leading the resolution of escalated issues that arise from clinical trial / research development activities.

The Manager, Research Development will also keep oversight of the pipeline of new trials across the CTC, identifying gaps in the programs and securing of new clinical trials/research projects being awarded to the CTC, ensuring an adequate amount of business being undertaken by the CTC at all times.

About you

As such, we see the importance of recruiting talent aligned to these values and are looking for a Manager, Research Development who can demonstrate the following skills, experience and qualifications;

  • minimum 5 years of relevant working experience in clinical trials management, as a project manager, research operations lead, research development lead, or similar role
  • knowledge of clinical trial requirements during their lifecycle from start up to close out, including a detailed understanding of the regulatory, ethical and governance processes and requirements in Australia (including a thorough knowledge of ICH GCP)
  • superior knowledge of clinical trial development processes, including a detailed understanding of progressing clinical trial ideas to a clinical trial project, obtaining clinical trial funding and attracting the relevant key stakeholders
  • demonstrated experience in the supervision, training, mentoring and performance management of staff; and experience managing and resolving a diverse range of HR issues.
  • financial management experience and literacy, including experience in preparing clinical trial budgets, securing funding, and financial reporting
  • ability and willingness to travel (<30% of time)
  • equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education / training. (E.g. Undergraduate (BSc) or higher degree in scientific, (bio)medical or health discipline, or similar education/training and relevant experience)

The successful incumbent will also have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to liaise confidently with internal and external stakeholders and be able to demonstrate tact and discretion in dealing with day to day operational matters.
