Population and Community Health (PaCH) is part of South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.

PaCH provides community health services that give care to individuals, families and carers, as well as population health services that focus on the whole community or key groups within the community.

PaCH's services are provided at the District's hospitals, community-based facilities including child and family health centres, community health centres and specialist clinics. We work with other service providers across South Eastern Sydney Local Health District, including hospitals and mental health services.

The Role

The Biopreparedness Epidemiologist is a non-medical epidemiology position to provide expert advice and services on all facets of surveillance, preparedness and response to infectious disease incidents and emergencies, such as pandemic influenza or other emergent, naturally occurring or bioterrorism related infectious disease. This position has a specific focus on immunisation and is responsible for supporting the different teams within the Public Health Unit (PHU) with outbreak investigations, the NSW Human Seaports and Airports Biosecurity Program, and providing epidemiological support to the health protection and research activities of the PHU.

Selection Criteria

• Masters or higher qualification in epidemiology or public health including quantitative subjects, or equivalent work experience with high-level technical expertise in epidemiologic methods and the investigation of public health problems.
• Knowledge of epidemiological methods relevant to infectious diseases prevention, surveillance and control.
• Demonstrated skills in managing a number of projects concurrently, with varying timeframes and workloads, in a high volume work environment.
• Experience working with the cruise ship industry and public health management of cases and outbreaks of disease on vessels.
• Demonstrated high level analytical and problem solving skills including the ability to negotiate and liaise with stakeholders, and to provide authoritative advice and recommendations across a large and complex organisation.
• High level of interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with the ability to communicate with a broad range of health professionals and other stakeholders.
• Demonstrated experience in research projects, including publication of peer-reviewed publications in the field of epidemiology and public health.
• Demonstrated competency in PC-based word processing, database, statistical analysis and web authoring software for the capture, analysis and presentation of data.
