The Alcohol and Other Drugs Prevention and Harm Minimisation Unit (AOD PHM) aims to keep people healthy by preventing misuse, minimising harm, and reducing the health, social and economic impact of alcohol and other drugs on individuals, families and community.

The AOD PHM:

  • Develops, implements, evaluates and reports on state-wide universal and targeted prevention and harm minimisation interventions, policies, programs and research;
  • Is the NSW Government core source of evidence-based information, education and advice on referrals for alcohol and other drugs; and
  • Works with the community, health sector, and other sectors and agencies to advance alcohol and other drugs prevention and harm minimisation.
The Unit sits within the Alcohol and Other Drugs Branch of the Centre for Population Health, NSW Ministry of Health and is hosted by South East Sydney Local Health District. 
 
The primary purpose of this role is to lead the research and evaluation of alcohol and other drugs population health programs and manage the AOD Evaluation Intervention Innovation Fund (EIIF) Grants Program.

Selection Criteria

  1. Relevant tertiary qualifications in health, social sciences or similar; or demonstrated equivalent relevant research experience.
  2. Excellent experience and sound skills in research and evaluation and the application of evidence based practice.
  3. Demonstrated experience in the management of, or application for, funding grants.
  4. Excellent understanding of the policy process and strategic planning and policy development skills, or proven ability to quickly gain this understanding.
  5. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing programs or research on a large scale or state-wide level.
  6. Sound understanding of concepts and issues in alcohol and other drugs, early intervention and population based prevention approaches.
  7. Demonstrated high level negotiation, verbal and written communication skills for the diversity of audiences and the ability to problem solve and manage complex issues within tight deadlines.
  8. Capacity to work independently with minimal supervision and in a team environment including demonstrated capacity to lead and coach.
