An exciting opportunity exists for a senior Occupational Therapist with a strong interest in mental health of older adults to join the St George Older Adults In-Patient Team. Our team has a strong commitment and focus on providing recovery-orientated, trauma informed and innovative approaches to supporting consumers in a mental health sub-acute setting .

The Senior Occupational Therapist will be based at St George Hospital, a 16 bed, sub-acute mental health facility in Kogarah. The service caters to older persons, with specialised skills in assisting older adults with their daily occupation needs. The Occupational Therapist will be a champion of the hospital’s commitment to providing recovery-orientated, innovative approaches to supporting our consumers and will bring clinical expertise in the field of older adults mental health. The Occupational Therapist will work closely with the MDT to provide holistic care within a fast paced and dynamic unit. 

What you'll be doing

Plan, coordinate, and implement in-depth levels of clinical expertise and extensive specialised knowledge within occupational therapy in order to provide high quality occupational therapy services to the patients admitted to the Older Persons Mental Health Unit at St George Hospital consistent with NSW Health, South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) policies, procedures and standards.  Assess, Plan, Organise, Deliver, Evaluate, and Report on the provision of high quality Occupational Therapy in accordance with Occupational Therapy Board of Australia Code of Conduct, NSW Health and SESLHD policies and clinical practices, to achieve best practice patient health outcomes within specified timeframes. Possess extensive specialist knowledge and skills in Older Persons Mental Health and be responsible for a diverse and complex caseload involving clients with multiple mental health diagnostic issues, co-morbidities and medical issues.

Employment of a temporary visa holder may only occur if no suitable permanent resident or citizen of Australia has been identified for this position following suitable labour market testing.

All workers and new recruits are required to receive 2 doses of a Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccine to commence employment/ engagement or continue to work within a NSW Health service.

 A worker and new recruit will be considered compliant if they have a medical contraindication to all available Therapeutic Goods Administration approved or recognised COVID-19 vaccines and provide medical contraindication evidence in line with the policy requirements.

In addition, all Category A workers and new recruits are required to receive one dose of the seasonal influenza vaccine annually to be considered compliant.

Category A workers and new recruits who are non-compliant with seasonal influenza vaccination or have a medical contraindication to influenza or COVID-19 vaccinations must comply with all other infection control risk reduction strategies as directed while working in a Category A position.

Selection Criteria

  1. Registered with AHPRA as an Occupational Therapist.
  2. Extensive post graduate clinical experience in Mental Health Occupational Therapy.
  3. Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills, including the ability to interact constructively with all stakeholders.
  4. Ability to provide in-depth advice and education to enhance service delivery.
  5. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills.
  6. Ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to consumer participation and recovery focus.
  8. Current New South Wales driver's licence.
