About The Opportunity
Serve as Obstetrics and Gynaecology Head of Department at Bowral & District Hospital maternity service. This is a Permanent Full Time role for a Staff Specialist and will also include a Temporary 5 year appointment as the Head of Department. The Head of Department role may become permanent for a successful candidate.

  • Provide clinical governance & obstetric leadership for Birthing unit policy and procedure development
  • Active surveillance of obstetric KPIs including maternal & perinatal morbidity and mortality
  • Review and monitor postpartum care of women in the hospital and via the midwifery-support programme at home following early discharge
  • Review and monitor women attending obstetric outpatient services receive a consistent client centred quality service.
  • Develop and expand models of care to meet the needs of women, including continuity of care high risk and low-risk midwifery models, as well as GPSC
  • Focus on improving obstetric outcomes for vulnerable women - including Aboriginal, CALD, migrant and refugee groups, and women with identified psycho-social vulnerabilities.
  • Demonstrate ongoing commitment to improving obstetric indicators - ACHS, WHA, HACs.

What You'll Be Doing
Provide clinical management and treatment of patients in a SWSLHD facility under your care. This care will be provided within the clinical privileges granted by the CE on the advice of the SWSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee.

Where You'll Be Working
Bowral & District Hospital is a major Rural Hospital which provides a wide range of services, including general medical, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric, surgical, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, geriatric and emergency services.

Bowral & District Hospital has been serving the needs of its local population for over a hundred years. The hospital has grown to an almost 100-bed facility, offering a range of general and specialised services. A $68.7 million investment in the redevelopment of the hospital saw a new Clinical Services Building open in late 2020, with a $55 million second stage of redevelopment works currently underway. 

Part of the South Western Sydney Local Health District, Bowral has close links with a range of Sydney's teaching and referring hospitals including Liverpool, Fairfield, Bankstown and Campbelltown Hospitals. B&DH provides clinical experience for Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Students from a number of Universities.

How to Apply
To be considered for this position, please ensure you address the selection criteria as thoroughly as possible.

  1. Current medical practitioner, registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and/or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
  2. Demonstrated current clinical practice of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice
  3. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
  4. Demonstrated participation in teaching and training at undergraduate and/or post graduate level, including supervision of junior medical staff
  5. Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education/ continuing professional development
  6. Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of a public health organisation, including the provision of services to the local community, effective utilisation of resources, and preparedness to participate in the provision of health services at an LHD level
  7. Preparedness to participate in a hospital, service or LHD on-call roster
  8. Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with other staff and practitioners and in a multidisciplinary health care team
