The Position:

This position represents an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated scientist to join the Health Data Analytics research team either in Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney or Perth. This multidisciplinary team conducts quantitative and qualitative research in areas such as hospital efficiencies, treatment effectiveness, risk prediction, workforce planning and implementation evaluations of new care models. These projects aim to improve the performance and sustainability of the Australian health system by capitalising on clinical/operational data and knowledge with analytics, optimisation, real-time monitoring for decision support and risk stratification tools. The scientific problems that arise are varied and challenging, requiring strong mathematical, statistical and system evaluation skills to develop innovative solutions in collaboration with scientists, clinicians and other health professionals.

The appointee will work on a wide variety of projects with the CSIRO's national Health Data Analytics team. The role includes working with a number of our collaboration partners, including undertaking potential part-time secondments and mentoring programs. The position provides an exciting career path for an applicant who is keen to be part of a growing team contributing towards research goals which has significant impact on national health policy and implementation science initiatives.  

Your duties will include:

  • Health data analytics and modelling to support evidence-based healthcare, and improved productivity, safety and quality.
  • Health system evaluation.
  • Health service performance advice.
  • Incorporating innovative approaches to scientific investigations by adapting and/or developing original concepts and ideas for new, existing and further research.
  • Performing /leading quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  • Validating data, results, and interpretations.
  • Achieving impact through publication and commercialisation.

Location: Melbourne, Brisbane, Sydney or Perth
Salary: $109k to $128k plus up to 15.4% superannuation
Tenure: Indefinite/Ongoing

To be successful you will have:

  • A doctorate in a relevant discipline area, such as statistics, applied mathematics, operations research, engineering, machine learning, data science, implementation research or health economics.
  • Track record of developing and maintaining external research collaborations and attracting funding.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, evidenced by first author journal publications, high-level reporting, presentation and negotiation abilities, and the capacity to identify and influence critical stakeholders to gain support for contentious proposals/ideas.
  • A strong track record in solving real world problems.
  • Ability to develop new methods to solve applied statistical/health data analytics/health system evaluation problems.
  • Proficiency with analytical packages, preferably R, including the ability to program new analyses.
