The Position

CSIRO is looking to appoint a Research Projects Officer – Animal health and Monitoring within the CSIRO Agriculture and Food business unit. As a successful applicant for this role you will help record data via direct observation of animals, measurements conducted on the animals, samples obtained from the animals, observations of pasture growth and samples of pasture. Animal species will include sheep, cattle and laying hens, but potentially also broilers, goats and other livestock species.

Your duties/responsibilities will include:

  • Support the research team when making measurements of animals (for example condition score, wrinkle score, bodyweight, reading electronic eartags), when obtaining samples from animals (for example blood, faeces, milk, wool and eggs) and when applying treatments to animals (for example vaccines, drenches, wearable monitoring devices, backliners).
  • Support the research team in preparing for experimental days (for example preparing labels, labelling tubes/vials, assembling equipment, checking equipment, safety assessments) during and following sampling (for example disposing of wastes, collating datasheets, primary processing of blood, pasture cuts and other samples, animal treatment recording, equipment and supplies inventory, packaging and postage of biological samples).
  • Observe and care for sheep, cattle and laying hens and potentially other animals such as broilers or goats. Vigilance will be required in observing animals for signs of disease, recording animal numbers and ensuring sufficient feed, water and shelter. Depending on species, tasks such as animal monitoring, care of lambs and calves at birth, feeding, water checking, moving of animals, animal health treatments, dagging.

Salary:          AU $46,918 – AU $60,476 plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be successful you will need:

  • Understanding of livestock husbandry and pasture management for sheep and cattle.
  • Possession of a current Australian driver’s licence.
  • A Q-fever vaccination or willingness to get vaccinated.
  • A willingness to travel to other CSIRO sites and field sites across Australia.
  • A willingness to work on weekends and outside normal business hours.
