The Position
CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral Fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral work experience.
All medical devices are associated with infections. However, catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are particularly problematic as they are the leading cause of hospital-acquired infections. Here, the project will exploit the extensive experience of the research team to develop novel antimicrobial coatings that provide long-term protection against microbial colonisation.
The postdoctoral fellow will answer several important scientific questions and develop key platform capabilities. These include establishing a comprehensive understanding of host-pathogen-catheter interactions, synthesising hydrophobic oligomers and polymers carrying antimicrobial drugs providing broad spectrum activity, and developing textured coatings that provide effective protection against microbial colonisation over a clinically meaningful time frame.
