The Position
We are seeking a Veterinarian to assist in the Biocontainment Large Animal Facility (LAF) at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) Geelong.  The Large Animal Facility (LAF) capability is essential for the support of the Australian Animal Health Laboratory (AAHL) Diagnostic Surveillance and Response Program response and research obligations and with Health and Biosecurity Business Unit currently working on COVID-19 vaccine development. 

As the Veterinarian, you will provide a high level of professional veterinary expertise in support of research projects using animals within ACDP’s microbiologically secure area.  You will work with a team of animal technicians and research staff in the provision of animal husbandry and care and ensure that animal usage adheres to the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.

Weekend work is involved on a roster basis and shift work may be required from time to time.  

A small team of dedicated people participates in the day to day running of the facility however many tasks involve working alone. All staff working in this environment must pass security, medical and psychological checks and be vaccinated against various diseases.

Your duties will include:
  • Working as part of the Animal Services Team in the Large Animal Facility deliver animal studies utilising AAHL’s biocontainment facility.
  • Providing veterinary expertise in support of research projects involving animals within the microbiologically contained facility at CSIRO AAHL. This includes conducting animal husbandry procedures and collection of biological samples such as blood and tissues form animals carrying infectious diseases.
  • Improving animal welfare through innovation, astute observation, promotion of animal welfare principles and compliance with Animal Ethics Committee protocols and policies.

To be considered you will need:
  1. A Veterinary Degree registrable with Veterinary Boards in Australia or registration by examination with an Australian Veterinary Board (relevant qualifications with experience may be considered).
  2. Experience with husbandry and handling a broad range of species such as domestic livestock, laboratory animals and/or wildlife and demonstrated competence in routine husbandry and management procedures in veterinary or medical research or diagnostic facility, or on a farm.
  3. Willingness to work with animals infected with serious zoonotic disease agents, following appropriate training including the wearing of personal protective equipment including biocontainment suits.
  4. The ability to develop and adapt veterinary and husbandry techniques for novel scientific procedures and unusual animal species.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work productively and harmoniously in a team, demonstration of an understanding of the basis of a successful team, and also an ability to work independently as required.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to safeguarding and improving the welfare of animals used in research including familiarity with the Australian code of practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
  7. Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and understand the purpose of such records in a research and diagnostic facility, which may include writing reports, for example, clinical or experimental records, publications in scientific journals or conference abstracts as well as writing of ethics committee proposals.
