As an Animal Technician at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), you will be a part of the Biocontainment Werribee Animal Health Facility (WAHF) site responsible to provide support with animal husbandry, collection of samples from research animals, data collection and storage, liaison with scientists and veterinarians, promotion of animal welfare and development of quality assurance systems with a particular focus on poultry, livestock, wildlife species and small mammals.

You’ll be a part of a small team of dedicated staff assisting in the day to day running of the facility with a focus on animal husbandry welfare, research assistance, waste management and facility maintenance within the usual OHSE guidelines and compliance. This role will involve weekend work on a roster basis and typically will include one weekend per month, including public holidays.

Your duties will include:

  • Provide animal husbandry, animal health monitoring and animal welfare support daily
  • Undertake and complete tasks under technical direction, working with discretion to decide on the timing of various operation support on-site.
  • Maintain records of animal ID, monitor health, and manage facility alongside equipment monitoring logs for the upkeep of research data and the facility.
  • Assist in the collection of biological samples from various species of animals to support research and regularly liaise with scientists, lab techs and vets and attend to their technical details.
  • Develop and maintain relevant quality standards as per the site requirement.
  • Supervise and assist other staff, cleaners, and contractors in decontamination of rooms, animal enclosures and equipment as per protocols.

Salary: AU$66k – AU$84k plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  • Diploma in Animal Studies or relevant experience in a similar research environment
  • Experience with husbandry and handling a broad range of species such as domestic livestock, laboratory animals and/or wildlife.
  • Demonstrated competence in routine husbandry and management procedures in veterinary or medical research or diagnostic facility, or on a farm.
  • Willingness to work with animals infected with zoonotic agents, following appropriate training including the wearing of personal protective equipment including Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR).
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate records and understand the purpose of such records in research and diagnostic facility.
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, maintaining the highest welfare standards.
