CSIRO’s Environment Business Unit brings together our capabilities in marine, atmospheric, water and terrestrial environment disciplines, as well as significant social and economic research, to align and support the nation in creating a better and more sustainable future. 
The Research Project Officer role sits in the Predator Populations Team of the Sustainable Marine Futures (SMF) Program.  You will contribute to studies involving molecular genetic analysis of both domestic and international marine and aquatic fish species populations of research interest, with a focus on leading the technical laboratory support for genetic monitoring programs of regionally and globally significant fisheries.

  • Extracting and purifying total nucleic acids (RNA and DNA) from animal tissues using manual and robotic methods.
  • Performing PCR amplification of genomic RNA and DNA. 
  • Analysing genomic RNA and DNA quality. 
  • Carrying out population genetic analyses using state-of-the-art software packages.
  • Contributing to scientific publications.

Location: Hobart, TAS
Salary: AU$68,148k – AU$86,733k per annum (pro-rata if part-time) plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:

  1. Relevant honours degree or equivalent work experience in a molecular genetics laboratory. 
  2. Experience in RNA and DNA extraction and purification. 
  3. Experience using robotic platforms for both liquid handling and nucleic acid extraction.
  4. Experience applying PCR techniques (single/multi plex reactions) and isothermal amplification methods. 
  5. Experience analysing of Diversity Array Technology (DArT) genotype data using R and generating reports on identification of genetic markers correlated with specific population attributes.
  6. Experience with multiplex DNA microsatellite PCR and analysis of resultant data.
  7. Experience undertaking remote/at sea fieldwork to collect tissue samples.
