PURPOSE
An exciting opportunity is available for a postdoctoral researcher to join the Retroviral Biology and Antivirals Lab (Life Sciences Discipline) to work on a multidisciplinary and multinational study to discover new drug classes for HIV treatment and prevention. This role requires expertise in biochemistry, protein work, biophysical techniques, enzyme assays, drug resistance and HIV virology to progress small fragment (chemical) hits into lead compounds as part of a drug discovery team including chemists and structural biologists. Small molecules that bind to novel sites on the target will be studied to advance fundamental knowledge of target structure and function underpinning the drug discovery activities. Opportunities exist for the applicant to participate in lab-based studies relevant to HIV transmission in women as well as cross-disciplinary projects in the HIV Disease Elimination Program with researchers in the Public health and International development disciplines at the Burnet Institute.
The position is supported by a NHMRC funded grant awarded in 2017 (ending Dec 2019).
RESPONSIBILITIES
Your responsibilities will include:
Driving lab research, publishing papers and presenting work at conferences and meetings
Progressing research projects towards translation (IP patent protection/industry engagement)
Mentoring and supervision of junior staff and students in lab work as well as written and oral presentations
Assisting with large funding applications and independently applying for funding on smaller projects
Assist in managing drug discovery project including coordinating and tracking activities of various groups on the project and organising regular meetings
