The Opportunity

The Life Science discipline at the Burnet Institute is expanding! As several new initiatives are being implemented, together with a strategic initiative to increase the level of support and capacity to our Laboratory teams, we have created the exciting new role of Laboratory Operations Manager.

You will work within the Laboratory Operations and Facilities support team and interact daily with a diverse group of researchers covering a range of infectious disease areas, including protein chemistry, immunology, vaccine development, diagnostics and more.

Some of your duties will include:

• Ensuring laboratories meet all relevant governmental, ISO and regulatory requirements i.e. GLP, OGTR, IBC, DAWE
• Assisting in managing PC3 operations: including, including responding to researcher requests, annual PC3 operations and procedure review, coordinating PC3 training and annual refresher
• Assisting in laboratory inspections, compliance monitoring and auditing, including non-compliance follow-up, risk mitigation development and rectification
• Maintaining excellent relationships with a diverse group of stakeholders
• Driving change to systems and processes closely liaising with laboratories
• Assisting in development of change management and communication strategies to implement new systems and processes
• Coordinating and assisting Burnet scientific experts in developing and writing SOPs for new scientific equipment and scientific procedure and risk assessments

This is a full-time position, part time applicants (0.8 - 1.0 FTE) will also be considered. The role is initially for a 2-year period with the possibility of extension. Flexible working hours will also be provided.

Let’s talk about you

The following criteria are essential:

• Proven understanding and experience in managing PC2 laboratories
• Proven ability to investigate, analyse and resolve issues as they arise.
• Proven technical expertise in protein chemistry, infectious disease (particularly virology) or immunology, relating to laboratory operations and research activities.
• Proven strong interpersonal skills and are able to work with a diverse population of stakeholders
• Experience in writing and reviewing equipment and procedure SOPs and OHS related documentation.
• Proven record of laboratory management under GLP/NATA, ISO 9001 laboratory quality management systems or ISO 17025.
• Strong organisational skills with demonstrated skills in prioritising, planning and time management

The following experience is preferable:

• Proven understanding and experience in managing or working within a PC3 environment
• Experience in change management or have been involved in major operational change
• Experience working under GLP/NATA, ISO 9001 laboratory quality management systems or ISO 17025.
