The Opportunity

A PhD scholarship is currently available to join the Disease Elimination Program at the Burnet Institute in Melbourne, in partnership with the Department of Gastroenterology at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. We have collaboratively developed, implemented and evaluated innovative models of hepatitis C care and harm reduction interventions for people involved in the criminal justice system. The current opportunity is to undertake analysis in the disciplines of epidemiology, intervention science, health economics and/or modelling to evaluate the effectiveness of a mobile nurse-led model of hepatitis C care for people in community corrections. Depending on the candidate’s expertise and interests, the PhD program could harness a range of datasets spanning multiple areas. The candidate will work with a team of other PhD candidates studying at Burnet across a diverse range of topics. The scholarship is available to current Australian residents only and may be undertaken through the University of Melbourne or Monash University.

Let’s talk about you

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate willing to learn new skills and undertake statistical analyses of a range of datasets. People within Australia with a relevant Honours or Masters (e.g Public Health, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Psychology) or equivalent, interested in a quantitative or mixed methods PhD that will help inform hepatitis C interventions in Australia and elsewhere are encouraged to apply. Ideally the candidate should have quantitative research skills and some experience with the use of statistical packages. Experience with longitudinal data, and clinical and administrative datasets would be an advantage, but is not essential. Candidature would be full time.

Who are we?

Burnet Institute is a leading Australian, unaligned, not-for-profit, organisation that uniquely links medical research with practical action to achieve better health for disadvantaged communities and help solve devastating global health problems.

Burnet Institute brings together a highly diverse skill base, with more than 400 staff and students working across cutting-edge research and projects to address some of the most relevant global health issues. Institute-wide interdisciplinary health programs (Disease Elimination, Health Security and Pandemic Preparedness, and Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health) are at the heart of our daily decision making. Harnessing our international and local field presence, our laboratories, and our mixed development and research cultures drives a greater focus on the most relevant health issues and achieves a greater impact as a result.

Whilst our headquarters is in Melbourne, Australia, we also have offices in Papua New Guinea and Myanmar, and are actively involved in research and public health programs throughout Australia, the Asia-Pacific region and Africa. Burnet is the only unaligned organisation in Australia that has dual accreditation with both the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

St Vincent’s Hospital

St Vincent's Hospital is a tertiary public healthcare service. St Vincent’s Hospital is one of five A1 tertiary hospitals in Melbourne. The Hospital provides general medical and surgical, specialist medical and surgical, state-wide services, extensive training and research and operates an area mental health service for northern and eastern corridors. We work with a vast network of collaborative partners to deliver high quality treatment, teaching, education and research. We have more than 5,000 staff and 880 beds in daily use across our services. We have 16 sites across Melbourne. This includes a major teaching, research and tertiary referral centre situated in Fitzroy, where the Department of Gastroenterology is based. The facility has extensive networks in rural and regional Victoria and is the provider of correctional health services for Victorian prisons. One of our five strategic priorities for Victoria is to extend our focus and impact on our targeted poor and vulnerable populations to address the social determinants of health, including providing primary care and persons living under corrections orders.

Bring your whole self to work

At Burnet, we foster a diverse and inclusive culture. We want our people to feel like they belong and are free to be themselves at work. We have an active Gender Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (GEDI) Council that works to promote and improve gender equity, diversity and inclusion across the Institute, by developing and implementing strategies informed by both national and international best practice and staff input. Burnet holds an Athena SWAN Institutional Bronze Award from Science in Gender Equity (SAGE).
