The Opportunity

An exciting opportunity exists for a Facilities/Laboratory Support Officer to join Burnet!

Your will work across the whole of Institute Facilities Support as well as Laboratory Facilities Support. Duties cover a wide range of areas including; facilities scheduling and coordination, Hazardous Chemical Management and more. You will be working directly with a wide range of diverse personnel from laboratory bench researchers to public health and NGO specialists.

Some of your duties will include:

  • Ensuring and coordinating regular maintenance & repair of essential plant and non-scientific equipment.
  • Overseeing contractors and vendors providing services to Burnet relating to plant and other equipment requirements.
  • Maintaining an inventory of facility-related equipment and supplies and coordinate procurement of new items as necessary.
  • Acting as key coordinator between Burnet Operations and both Alfred Engineering and Baker Engineering, maintaining a list of the key contacts and roles.
  • Ensure Hazardous Chemicals are appropriately identified, managed, stored, handled, and disposed of.
  • Ensure that all safety and compliance standards required for institute certifications are met.
  • Monitor systems and processes, identify and propose risk mitigation options where deemed necessary.

Let’s talk about you

The following criteria are essential requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in Facilities Management or equivalent, in a Research Institute, University or Biotech Industry
  • Proven understanding of and experience in working within PC2 laboratories
  • Proven understanding and experience of Hazardous Chemical Handling, GHS, Poisons, Liquid Nitrogen handling, OH&S etc.
  • Ability to train staff and students in Hazardous Chemical Handling
  • Experience in managing temperature monitoring systems, e.g., TempTrack or equivalent.
  • Proven ability in writing Standard Operating Procedures and review
  • Proven strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse population of stakeholders
  • Willingness to providing assistance to the Support Team for after hour emergency responses.
  • Proven ability to investigate, analyse and resolve issues as they arise.
  • High level proficiency in computer software packages including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, electronic mail, and the use of the internet as a business management tool.
  • Well-developed understanding of and commitment to Health & Safety regulations and procedures.
  • Strong organisational skills with demonstrated skills in prioritising, planning and time management
