Research Assistant- Genome Integrity Group

  • Make an important contribution to the health of children through medical research
  • Work with one of Australia’s most respected national and independent medical research institutes
  • Gain valuable experience in a molecular biology research laboratory

The Children’s Medical Research Institute (CMRI) was Australia’s first dedicated paediatric research facility and continues to be one of the nation’s most highly regarded independent medical research centres. CMRI is located in Westmead, and research at the institute focuses on cancer and genome stability, nerve cell signalling, gene therapy, and embryonic development. Researchers at CMRI have access to state-of-the-art facilities and work alongside dynamic and supportive scientists that include university and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and laboratory directors. Our achievements are made possible by state and federal grants, a network of community supporters, and the Jeans for Genes® fund-raising campaign.

Applications are invited for a research assistant (RA) position in the Genome Integrity Unit to support on-going research related to telomere biology and DNA replication. The project is a cell and molecular biology-based approach measured through live-, fixed, and super-resolution microscopy, mass spectrometry, biochemistry, and cell-based methods. The candidate will be supervised by Associate Professor Tony Cesare (Head of the CMRI Genome Integrity Unit) and work in collaboration with members of the Cesare lab (twitter: @TheCesareLab). This is a fantastic opportunity for junior researchers to enter a productive laboratory in a dynamic and professional research organization.

The position is available starting 1 August 2021. The successful candidate will work directly with post-doctoral scientists and will perform techniques that include cell culture; live-cell and fixed sample microscopy; molecular cloning, transfection, transduction, and cell line generation; cell proliferation assays; western blots; PCR and more. Positions will be for one (1) year and renewable based on performance. Applicants should hold a BSc (Hons) or equivalent in biological or biomedical sciences with established skills in cell and molecular biological techniques. Experience in the methods described above is desirable.

The hired individual will be compensated with a competitive remuneration package in accordance with qualifications and experience. Additional benefits include the provision of a Public Benevolent Institution salary packaging scheme and participation in an employer-contributed superannuation fund.

Applications should submit an application package including a cover letter (citing PV2133), curriculum vitae, academic transcript, and the contact details (phone and email) of three professional referees to
