The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease through world class medical research. Established in 1994, it is the legacy of legendary heart transplant surgeon Victor Chang. Renowned for the quality of its breakthroughs, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is working to discover better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent the onset of heart disease.

The role

Professor Sally Dunwoodie is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant or Post-Doctoral Scientist with extensive expertise in molecular biology and cell biology.

In this role you will join a highly successful multi-disciplinary team that discovers the genetic causes of birth defects through whole genome sequencing.

You will:

  • Establish various high-throughput assays to test the function of gene variants identified in patients with birth defects.
  • Quantify the functional effects of gene variants identified in patients.
  • Advise which gene variants are the best candidates for further analysis in model systems.

You will be working with a team that:

  • Develops mouse models of birth defects using CRISPR technology.
  • Develops patient iPSC-derived cardiomyocytes, and phenotypes them using multiple OMICS, robotics and sophisticated imaging and electrophysiology equipment.

We would like to meet you if you have:

  • The following qualifications: BSc +/- MSC +/- PhD.
  • Extensive experience in molecular biology including genetic modification, cell biology, cell culture, immunofluorescence and imaging.
  • Experience with high-throughput techniques, assay development and analysis, CRISPR genome editing and/or human iPSC culture will be advantageous.
