The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease through world class medical research. Established in 1994, it is the legacy of legendary heart transplant surgeon Victor Chang. Renowned for the quality of its breakthroughs, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is working to discover better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent the onset of heart disease.

The role

The Vascular Epigenetics Laboratory, headed by Dr Renjing Liu, is seeking a highly motivated junior postdoctoral scientist with experience in using genetically modified mice, particularly lineage tracing reporter mice. Preference will be given to candidates able to perform vascular surgeries including carotid/femoral ligation, cuff and wire injury models.

You will be part of a highly collaborative group working to uncover the fundamental processes involved in vascular disease development. The Vascular Epigenetics Lab uses cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology tools and develops state-of-the-art animal models to identify novel genes and pathways involved in vascular diseases.

A large component of this role will involve microscopy work including the use of light sheet microscopy. Additionally, you will use cellular and molecular techniques to modify genes and pathways involved in various vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis and aneurysms. You will be responsible for learning and applying these techniques to your project.

Additional duties include supervision of junior staff and students in the lab.  You will be required to apply for external grant funding and contribute to manuscript writing.

The position is fully funded for 2 years, with the possibility of an extension. You will be available to start the role in June 2021.

About you

We would like to meet you if you have:

• Prior experience working with genetically engineered mice. Preference will be given to candidates with small animal surgery skills.
• Extensive experience in some or all of the following: cell culture (primary culture), molecular biology, histology, microscopy and image analysis, and genetic modification using viruses.
• High self-motivation and capability for independent work.
• Experience in grant and manuscript writing.
• Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with the ability to liaise with a diverse range of people.
