About us

The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease and is one of the most respected heart research facilities in the world. The Victor Chang Innovation Centre, is comprised of seven cutting-edge facilities aimed at advancing cardiovascular research. The new technology platforms housed in the innovation centre are allowing us to understand how the heart works at a much deeper level and will facilitate the development of better treatments for cardiovascular disease. We are currently seeking an exceptional person to join the Preclinical Imaging Facility in the Innovation Centre, as the Preclinical Imaging Research Scientist.

The role

As the Preclinical Imaging Research Scientist, you will report to the Head, Preclinical Imaging Facility, and work closely with the Senior Manager, Director and Deputy Director of the Innovation Centre, all Innovation Centre staff, Faculty and Operations team.

You will maintain and operate the instruments within the Facility, providing expert technical support and enabling researchers to undertake advanced preclinical imaging studies. You will train and advise researchers and work collaboratively with them on their studies. You will take an active role in the daily operations of the Facility, ensuring a high level of service, excellent user experience, capture of metrics for reporting, and compliance with all Work, Health and Safety standards

Responsibilities:

  • Provide in-depth technical knowledge of advanced preclinical imaging modalities (MRI, PET, ultrasound, microCT) to users of the Facility.
  • Support and work collaboratively with users of the Facility on imaging methodology, experimental design, ethics submissions and scientific publications.
  • Report research findings, perform data analysis, use statistical tools and undertake problem-solving activities in preclinical imaging.
  • Induct, train and supervise users in the Facility.
  • Undertake small animal handling, anaesthesia and injection techniques.
  • Understand and comply with radioactivity safety, handling and regulations.
  • Commit to undertake further training and studies to develop advanced skills in Facility techniques and image post-processing and quantification, with a particular focus on cardiac imaging.
  • Maintain the Facility, and the instruments, including any preventative work/maintenance protocols.
  • Ensure that the relevant Work, Health and Safety standards of the Facility are compliant and aligned with the VCCRI’s WHS policy.

About you

You will have extensive experience in preclinical imaging in a health research environment. You will have expertise in PET, MRI, CT and ultrasound, and an ability to use this expertise to assist the Head, Preclinical Imaging Facility to develop new applications for our suite of cutting-edge technology to extend the capabilities of the Facility.

Please apply if you satisfy the following criteria:  

  • Postgraduate qualifications and/or experience in a discipline involving MR, PET, CT and ultrasound imaging. 
  • Extensive hands-on experience in the operation of preclinical imaging systems, including the design, development and implementation of new methods, applications and associated data processing and analysis. 
  • Hands-on experience in the use of radiochemicals, and in-depth understanding of legislative requirements for PET imaging.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work with, train and support others in the use of preclinical imaging experiments in a multi-disciplinary research environment. 
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Strong customer service ethic and approach.
  • Competent in the use of key desktop applications (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of MR Solutions MR and PET systems.
  • Knowledge of cardiac physiology and imaging.
