The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is dedicated to finding cures for cardiovascular disease through world class medical research. Established in 1994, it is the legacy of legendary heart transplant surgeon Victor Chang. Renowned for the quality of its breakthroughs, the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute is working to discover better ways to diagnose, treat and ultimately prevent the onset of heart disease.

The role

We have an immediate opening for a full-time Research Assistant with cell and molecular biology experience to join the Vascular Epigenetics Laboratory.
You will be part of a highly collaborative and enthusiastic group to uncover the fundamental processes involved in vascular disease development. The Vascular Epigenetics lab uses cutting-edge molecular and cellular biology tools and develops state-of-the-art animal models for their research.

In this role, you will prepare proteins and RNA from cells and tissues, perform knockdown and overexpression experiments in vitro and in vivo, assist other researchers in the lab with animal and monitoring of animals pre- and post-surgery. You will also be responsible for collection of tissue samples for downstream analysis such as histology/microscopy and protein/RNA analysis and perform data analyses.

Additional duties include provision of stock solutions for general lab use, maintenance of records/databases of reagents and cell/animal lines. 
This position is fully funded for 2 years, and particularly suitable for those interested in pursuing a PhD later in their career (PhD scholarships and top-ups are available).

About you

We would like to meet you if you have:

  • Have a BSc Honours/Masters in cellular and/or molecular biology or equivalent
  • Proficient in basic molecular biology skills such as qPCR, western blots and histology
  • Mammalian cell culture experience
  • Experience with animal models (desirable)
  • The ability to self-motivate and are capable of some independent work
  • Excellent organisation skills and note keeping
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills with the ability to liaise with a diverse range of people
