Cancer Council Victoria (Cancer Council) is an independent charity that has been leading the fight against cancer since 1936. We are the largest non-government provider of cancer research funds in Victoria. Cancer Council Victoria undertakes three important aspects of cancer control — research, prevention and support for people with cancer, their families and friends. Our people undertake the work of the Council in line with the values of Excellence, Integrity and Compassion.  

The Research Governance Unit sits within the Strategy and Support Division and manages the research policies and processes for Cancer Council Victoria.  The Unit oversees the competitive funding for clinical and biomedical research in Victorian hospitals, universities and medical research institutes.  The Unit also provides secretariat support for Cancer Council Victoria’s Human Research Ethics Committee and operates as the Research Administration Office for external funding bodies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council.

About your opportunity

We are seeking a meticulous and self-motivated Research Assistant to support a scheduled research citation review project within the Research Governance Unit. Reporting to the Manager of Research Governance and the project steering committee, you will:  

  • Collate and check journal article lists for extramural and intramural research, conducting searches using publication databases such as PubMed
  • Manage databases, including data cleaning, input and extraction, and maintaining records according to established guidelines
  • Manipulate and analyse data across various databases and software including iCite, EndNote and Excel
  • Liaise with internal and external researchers to identify and retrieve journal papers published from CCV-funded research
  • Deliver reports as directed by the Manager, including writing up results and progress reports for the steering committee, senior management and the Board

You will play a key role in this research evaluation project, applying your research skills and attention to detail to assess the influence of published journal article research output for a leading non-profit.

All about you

We are looking for someone with:

  • A tertiary degree in a health related discipline
  • Familiarity with scientific research processes and conventions, including experience reviewing literature and data according to established guidelines
  • Experience working across various databases and software including PubMed, EndNote, iCite and Excel, and the ability to quickly learn new systems
  • Excellent attention to detail and highly developed organisational skills, with the ability to effectively prioritise work to meet deadlines
  • Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to draft reports, and liaise with internal and external stakeholders

What we can offer you

This part-time (0.5 FTE) fixed term position for 3 months provides a salary within range $49,135 - $54,181 pa pro rata, plus superannuation, annual leave loading and the benefits of not-for-profit salary packaging and a meal entertainment card. We also offer a flexible and friendly work environment, social and wellbeing activities and a location close to public transport.
