The Role
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drugs (AToD) Program is diverse and provides AToD related advice to a range of stakeholders. This includes clinical consultation, delivering group training and contributing to the ADF AToD strategy. The AToD Coordinator reports directly to the Regional Mental Health Manager and provides high quality health promotion, prevention and early intervention products and initiatives to address AToD and gambling related
harm at the tactical level.

The AToD Coordinator is part of a National Team responsible for:

  • Defence member mental health and wellbeing: This includes contributing to the planning, facilitation and evaluation of targeted AToD and other mental health, promotion, prevention and early intervention products and initiatives including group programs. It also includes providing clinical services to members who present with complex AToD related issues and coordination of their care. The AToD coordinator ensures all initiatives are based on the best available evidence and comply with the broader AToD Program and ADFCMH priorities.
  • Health workforce skilling: This includes the delivery of targeted AToD and mental health training designed to enhance the knowledge and capacity of health professionals to support members experiencing AToD and/or mental health issues.
  • Specialist consultancy services: The AToD Coordinator will provide AToD-specific leadership, support and advice to health professionals, mental health providers, leaders and commanders regarding prevention, assessment, management and referral pathways for units or members who require AToD treatment and support. It may also include engagement with, and provision of support to, a group of ‘Lived Experience Peer Supporters’.
  • Strategic engagement: The AToD Coordinator will actively liaise and engage with a range of internal and external stakeholders to build partnerships and local capacity that strengthens mental health promotion, prevention and early intervention activities and optimises the mental health of Defence members.

Regular overnight travel to regional Defence bases, as well as some interstate travel will be required.

The current positions are ongoing however, we will be creating a merit pool to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that become available within the next 12 months.

About our Team
The AToD Coordinator is part of the Regional Mental Health Team, within the ADF Centre for Mental Health (ADFCMH). The ADFCMH is a national asset within Joint Health Command which provides leadership, best practice and innovation in military mental health. The ADFCMH's mission is to enhance Defence capability through engagement, consultancy and evidence-based health promotion, prevention and early intervention programs and initiatives.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal candidate would have extensive experience in the AToD field particularly in prevention, education, and clinical intervention. They would have experience in delivering programs and clinical services to ADF, or similar, populations.

The ideal candidate would also have advanced AToD knowledge, skills and experience to enable them to perform at an expert level in this role.
