The Role
People seeking to join the Australian Defence Force (ADF) can choose from more than 150 different jobs, depending upon their qualifications, skills and career interests. Many of these roles are considered particularly complex and/or high risk, especially from a psychological point of view, including functions such as Aviation, Intelligence, Cyber Warfare, Submarine Warfare, and Special Forces. Applicants for these more complex roles are required to undergo targeted psychological assessments as part of their selection process.

This position is responsible for the development and maintenance of psychological assessment policy, guidelines and standards applying to applicants seeking to join the Australian Defence Force, and/or transfer from one ADF job role to another. Working with relevant subject matter experts, the position will identify the key psychological risks associated with these complex job roles, and develop psychological assessments designed to facilitate a good 'match' between the qualities of the applicant and the requirements of the role.

NOTE: The current position is ongoing however we will be creating a merit pool to fill similar ongoing and non-ongoing positions that become available within the next 12 months.

About our Team
As a member of the Directorate of Occupational Psychology, the successful applicant will contribute to the ongoing review and maintenance of the ADF's Psychology Services Manual (PSYMAN), the core source of technical guidance for Defence psychologists engaged in the conduct of Occupational Suitability Assessments (OSA).

The PSYMAN is currently undergoing a comprehensive structural and content review to ensure it remains comprehensive, current and generally fit for purpose in meeting the needs of a constantly evolving Defence Force. Recent and current events, including the forthcoming Royal Commission into ADF and Veterans Suicide, has raised the profile of mental health within the ADF, meaning that the importance of making sure the right person gets selected and trained has perhaps never been more clear. The Occupational Psychology team is dedicated to ensuring that psychological assessments underpinning the OSA process are reliable, valid, and consistent with relevant legal, ethical and organisational requirements.

Our Ideal Candidate
Our ideal applicant will be registered as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia, preferably with a post-graduate qualification in Psychology. Applicants currently engaged in post-graduate study towards such a qualification, and/or undergoing supervision leading to registration, will also be competitive. The ideal applicant will have a sound understanding of non-clinical assessment tools and techniques, including cognitive and non-cognitive (eg, personality) testing and interviewing, legal and ethical requirements, and record keeping, applicable to the conduct of Occupational Suitability Assessments. The successful applicant will also require strong consultation and stakeholder management skills, strong written and oral communication skills, sound research skills (eg, the ability to undertake effective literature reviews), and the ability to manage multiple ongoing tasks.
