The Role
The Group Leader Biological Defence will report to the Research Leader Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence (CBRND). They will be responsible, under broad guidelines, for providing effective leadership to the scientists, engineers and technicians who work in the Biological Defence Science & Technology Capability (STC). They will have a national or international reputation in a biological discipline, and a comprehensive understanding of the exploitation of biological processes and will be expected to understand and utilise the best scientific technologies to achieve Defence and national security outcomes. They will be accountable for the development and sustainment of S&T undertaken by the Biological Defence STC with guidance and approval from RL CBRND. This includes the management of the Biological Defence STC resources to achieve objectives, and the reporting of outcomes of the work to relevant client representatives on a regular basis.

About our Team
Land Division leads the impetus for innovation within Australian land force operations by providing science and technology advice about equipment, personnel and processes utilised by the land force. The Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defence (CBRND) Major Science and Technology Capability (MSTC) within DST Group’s Land Division (LD) drives the application of science and technology to solve problems and deliver solutions for the Australian Government and the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to prevent, counter and mitigate the effects of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents.

The CBRN Defence MSTC within Land Division (LD) of DST Group leads the application of the tools and techniques of biology, chemistry, physical sciences and related disciplines to inform, safeguard and mitigate the risk posed by chemical, biological and radiological threats to personnel and missions of Defence and National Security organisations.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • Provide leadership, oversight and management of the Biological Defence STC that is consistent with DSTG strategic planning and ensures effective delivery of biological-based scientific and technological outcomes to the Department of Defence and national security.
  • Make a substantial personal contribution to the achievement of the Biological Defence STC research outcomes.
  • Provide effective leadership, management and development of staff within the Biological Defence STC which assists staff to deliver high impact solutions.
  • Develop and promote a strong culture of scientific excellence, matched with the setting of appropriate standards for the quality of the work.
  • Provide leadership for all infrastructure which underpins the Biological Defence STC, including its sustainment and development to meet current and future Defence needs.
  • Develop and maintain specific internal cross group and external collaborative relationships (national, international, industry or academic) that are of benefit to the Biological Defence STC.
