The Role 
Join a team of health professionals providing high quality health care to members of the Australian Defence Force. As part of the team of Joint Health Unit leaders, the Senior Mental Health Advisor (SMHA) is accountable under broad direction to assist with the management of Mental Health clinicians within the region. 

The successful candidate will be working in a complex, integrated workforce. They will require an in depth knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements. 

The SMHA will exercise a considerable degree of independence and perform a subject matter expert role. They will exercise sound decision making and judgement to provide expert policy advice. They will have in-depth knowledge of the allied health function and are responsible for the development, implementation, compliance and review of policies and procedures relevant to their work within that function. They will engage in very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate and perform detailed or sensitive projects that impact on strategic, political or operational outcomes for Defence. 

The SMHA is expected to be capable of building team capability through coaching and feedback and reviewing and developing the quality of work undertaken by others. The SMHA will be responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships and will be required to identify and address relevant stakeholders’ expectations and concerns to achieve outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development of their work area. 

As a regional lead, travel to Defence bases within North Queensland is required. A Defence vehicle will be provided for all travel. Note: This position is currently non-ongoing for up to 12 months. 

We will also be creating a merit pool for similar ongoing and non-ongoing opportunities over the next 18 months.  

About our Team 
The JHU-NQLD mental health teams consist of highly performing health professionals with a strong desire to support and enable the ADF's primary mission. While the teams are managed by Health Centre Managers, you will be expected to work closely with those key stakeholders to provide technical and clinical guidance across a range of mental health considerations to enable effective delivery of mental health services. 

You will be expected to work closely with the Psychology Manager, the Senior Military Psychology Officer, and the Staff Officer Grade 1 Mental Health Clinical Advisory Group in direct support of the delivery of mental health services in your region. 

You will report directly to the Commanding Officer and be expected to provide your SME advice on a range of complex clinical issues as well as ensuring the mental health teams have the required skills and knowledge to delivery mental health services. 

You will have a small team of health administrators to enable the delivery and coordination of Joint Health Command mental health services.

The role requires building strong links with Military leadership to ensure the needs of the individual and organisation are met.
