The Role

We are offering an opportunity to contribute to Defence wellbeing and capability by assisting individuals impacted by sexual misconduct. 

The Sexual Misconduct Prevention and Response Office (SeMPRO) is looking for motivated Social Workers or Psychologists to join its Client Response Team (CRT). Established in 2013 in the Department of Defence, SeMPRO assists people impacted by sexual misconduct and delivers education in support of Defence's sexual misconduct prevention efforts. 1800 SeMPRO is a 24/7 confidential advice and support service staffed by psychologists and social workers.

As a member of our team, you will assist with strategies to improve clients’ wellbeing and promote their physical and psychological safety. Using your expertise, you will help navigate the next steps by talking clients through their choices for Defence and civilian healthcare and support services, including providing referrals for services in a client’s geographic area both in Australia and overseas. You will help clients understand the reporting process, and can be available to support a client through an investigation phase and legal processes if requested. You will also provide advice to commanders and supervisors who are managing a person impacted by sexual misconduct or anyone receiving a disclosure of sexual misconduct. You may provide debriefing for individuals exposed to potentially traumatic material in the workplace.

Additionally, as a SeMPRO team member you have the rewarding opportunity to deliver education to personnel in support of Defence’s sexual misconduct prevention efforts and provide subject matter expertise for Defence policy and processes across a range of psycho-social risk and well-being initiatives. Opportunities also exist for your professional development and engagement with national and international partners in our collaborative efforts to reduce sexual misconduct. SeMPRO also funds professional registration fees and monthly professional supervision for our social workers and psychologists.

Applicants deemed suitable with exceptional skills, experience or expertise may be eligible for an Individual Flexibility Arrangement (IFA) in accordance with the IFA provisions of the Defence Enterprise Agreement 2017-2020. This may include additional remuneration and/or the variation of other conditions. In these cases, total remuneration will comprise of base salary + IFA additional remuneration + superannuation. 

About our Team

We are a small team of mental health professionals based in Canberra who support Defence personnel anywhere in Australia and overseas.

The Client Response Team provides confidential help to all Defence personnel, available via telephone, email or text message, using client-focused, trauma-informed principles. This service is available for current or ex-serving Australian Defence Force (ADF) members, APS employees, Defence contractors, ADF Cadets, Instructors or Officers of ADF Cadets, commanders, managers, colleagues, friends, or family members who have been impacted by sexual misconduct.

Our colleagues are research, education, communications, and business intelligence specialists who work collaboratively to achieve results for Defence.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are looking for a capable and confident mental health professional and proactive team player with a client-focused and trauma-informed practice framework. Success in the role will come from the ability to address the needs of a range of Defence clients via a range of mediums, attention to detail, strong assessment and documentation skills, commitment to professional standards.

Our ideal candidate should be confident in their use of technology in service delivery, including mobile phone, VOIP, video, email and text messages, and confident in their use of technology in data management, including the Microsoft suite of programs. Ideally, this candidate would also possess demonstrated experience maintaining data integrity, quality assurance and / or clinical governance. 

Finally, in order to work in support of our Defence people, we are looking for a new team member with an understanding of Defence policy and processes, an interest in working with Defence personnel, or developing skills in this area.
