Clinical Trials Nurse

 

The Institute for Respiratory Health (Inc) is a not-for-profit medical research institute, carrying out scientific and clinical research into the treatment and management of lung disease including asthma, allergies, lung cancer, infectious diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Within the Institute sits the Clinical Trials Unit, one of the largest respiratory trials clinics in Australia.

We are seeking the services of an experienced Registered Nurse to play a key role in our Clinical Trials Unit by being responsible for the primary coordination of clinical trials and the management of patients on those trials. The role involves delivery of direct and in-direct clinical-trial-related care of patients, associated data collection and maintenance of essential trial documents for concurrent studies. The Clinical Trials Nurse will work closely with our Study Coordinators, Nurses, Doctors and Unit Manager to ensure exceptional patient outcomes.

The role

  • 0.4 - 0.6 FTE part-time or casual role
  • Contribute to the Institute's research activities within the Clinical Trials Unit under direction of the Principal Investigator and Clinical Trials Manager.
  • Carry out clinical trials procedures according to study protocols.
  • Monitor patients' progress in these studies.
  • Liaise with sponsors, medical and research staff, ethics committees and other internal and external parties.
  • Coordinate patient recruitment strategies, including database creation and maintenance.
  • Interview and screen patients with regard to their suitability for participation in clinical trials.
  • Education of patients with respect to asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases.
  • Meet monthly individual and collective team goals established together with management.
  • Other related duties as required.

Selection Criteria:

Essential requirements

  • Nursing qualifications.
  • Ability to carry out duties both within a team and independently.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and reliable and accurate data management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and patients.
  • Proficiency in a range of computing skills including word processing, spreadsheets, email and online/internet-based systems and ideally databases.
  • Staff must comply with, including Operational Directive 0388/12 “Health Care Worker Immunisation Policy” (issued under the Public Health Policy Framework), or its replacement.
  • Strong attention to detail.

Desirable requirements

  • Previous experience in a position involving recruitment and coordination of clinical trials.
  • Knowledge of and certification in good clinical research practice (ICH GCP).
  • Knowledge of basic epidemiology, aetiology and treatment of asthma, COPD and other respiratory diseases.
  • Skills in techniques related to assessment of respiratory function and in phlebotomy.
