This position is located in the Safety Team of Research Support and Governance and is one of 3 advisors and a Manager. The Safety Team  provides  advice to staff and tenants on how the organisation can provide a safe workplace that complies with the Work Health and Safety Act and related legislation.

Reporting to the Safety Manager, you will be part of a small team in ensuring that QIMR Berghofer complies with Work Health and Safety Act 2011, chemical and Radiation Safety and Fire Safety and with regulations pertaining to the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR),  and Department of Agriculture for quarantine controlled material . You will participate in the management of hazardous chemicals and scheduled drugs. You will meet with and foster relationships with scientists to assist them in their research by advising on safety issues relating to your role.  Your role will take you into all areas of the Institute from laboratories to workshops and administration areas.

This role would suit a person who is tertiary qualified in science and has experience in a laboratory within a research institute or similar environment and knowledge of current molecular biology techniques.  Knowledge of  Work Health and Safety regulations pertaining to work in a laboratory is essential as are strong written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills.  An understanding of radiation safety and the gene technology legislation would be highly regarded but is not essential. A Certificate IV in WHS or a previous WHSO certification is desirable.

Salary range is $67,477 - $74,307 per annum plus superannuation and salary packaging. This is a permanent full-time appointment.
