Dr William Coote has been appointed the Acting Director of the Professional Services Review,  replacing Dr Tony Webber who has been in the position for the past six years

The Professional Services Review is an independent statutory authority that examines cases where health practitioners may have inappropriately rendered or initiated services that attract a Medicare Benefits Schedule rebate, or inappropriately prescribed under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme.

The Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon said Dr Coote will manage the PSR’s accountability process and help ensure Australia’s health system continues to be both high quality and sustainable.

Dr Coote was previously the Secretary-General of the Australian Medical Association, the inaugural CEO of General Practice Education and Training Limited, and has operated a general practice in south Brisbane.

Dr William Coote’s three-month tenure begins 14 August. A permanent candidate for the position is being considered by Cabinet and will be announced in the coming months.
