The media expects the Federal Government will soon dump its GP co-payment plan.

Various outlets say Health Minister Sussan Ley has told a small group of backbenchers that the $5 payment will be scrapped.

But, speculators say the Government will keep its plan to freeze the indexation of the Medicare rebate to create a so-called “value signal”.

They say the Government wants the freeze to erode the amount of money paid to doctors through the rebate, forcing them to pass on the cost to patients.

“We are consulting with the medical profession,” Prime Minister Tony Abbott told reporters in New Zealand on Monday morning.

“But it's no secret that we have been rethinking some policies that were brought down last year.”

Meanwhile, the Australian Medical Association says it will tour the nation to gauge the devastating effects of the Government’s Medicare reforms.

The AMA will be hosting doctor forums for hundreds of members and non-members in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Details of upcoming events are accessible under the Twitter hashtag #MedicareForum.

Forums have already been held in Hobart and Canberra, and the AMA says the message from the meetings is that doctors and their patients want the Government to scrap its plans to cut the Medicare patient rebate by $5.

The medical community has also called for the scrapping of plans to freeze Medicare rebate indexation until 2018, as well as the “unfair and inequitable” GP co-payment model.

AMA President Dr Brian Owler says one of the biggest factors in the Government’s current leadership division is the fact that voters are strongly opposed to the proposed Medicare changes.

“New Health Minister, Sussan Ley, has promised to be more consultative and that is what she has been doing,” Dr Owler said.

“We are using these forums to gather further evidence for the Minister of the need for the Government to scrap the rest of its fatally flawed Medicare reform package.

“The Government’s proposals hit disadvantaged patients the hardest, and threaten the viability of general practices across the country.

“The Government’s Medicare changes are fiscal policy, not health policy. They must be scrapped.

“The leadership team that emerges from the Coalition party room next Tuesday must send a clear message to the Australian community – the Medicare reforms, including the flawed co-payment model, are no longer Government policy.”

The AMA will be collating the evidence from the various forums to present to the Minister.
