A new Tasmanian health service will soon start offering fully bulk billed home visits by GPs.

But some doctors are sceptical about the Call the Doctor service, saying it is a poor use of heath funding.

“The care that is delivered to that patient is fragmented, it is not as efficient,” Australian Medical Association’s Dr Tim Greenaway told reporters on the weekend.

“Costs ultimately go up due to unnecessary investigations.”

But health analyst Martyn Goddard has told the ABC that the service will boost competition among GPs and can only be a good thing for consumers.

“It's going to be 100 per cent bulk billed,” he said.

“The GPs aren't going to like it because this is going to be competition, Tasmania has some of the lowest bulk billing rates in the country.

“It's a lot cheaper than sending people to emergency where it's going to cost a lot more,” he said.

The AMA says there is no evidence the ER presentations have dropped due to similar services interstate.
