The Federal Government has introduced the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) Bill into Parliament, which will seek to establish the nation’s first disability insurance scheme.

Once passed, the legislation will see the NDIS roll out for over 20,000 people mid next year across five launch sites.

The Bill will establish the NDIS Launch Transition agency as an independent body to roll out the scheme throughout next year.

The Agency has been tasked with working with various groups to develop a personalised plan that identifies their goals, aspirations and a finalised statement of support they will receive through the NDIS.

The Bill also allows for individuals to manage their own funding if they choose to do so.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard said that the Bill has been heavily shaped by the feedback received from the Government from various individuals, organisations and care providers.

“The Government has asked the Parliament to refer the Bill to the Senate Community Affairs Legislation Committee for consideration, so that we can continue to receive feedback about this important reform,” Ms Gillard said.
