Almost $70 million is expected to be delivered to two major South Australian hospitals as the Federal Government prepares to deliver its 2011-12 Federal Budget.

Port Lincoln and Mount Gambier hospitals are the expected to receive Government funding to improve palliative care, mental care facilities and cancer care beds as hospital funding has been announced across the country, including similar funding injections for Queensland and New South Wales hospitals.

A further $160 million is expected to be delivered to New South Wales’ for a new Bega hospital in the state’s south, backing the $10 million already promised by the State Government.

However, no funding has been axed for a previously planned medical precinct of the University of Wollongong. The Federal Government is expected completely cut its previously planned funding for the precinct, which needed $160 million to complete construction.

The centre, which was to be operated by St Vincent’s and Mater Health Sydney, was expected to generate over 1000 permanent jobs.

A further $57 million is expected to be delivered to WA health, with Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon announcing the funding in separate initiatives across the state, such as:

  • 22 dialysis in remote areas
  • 46 patient accommodation units
  • Six-surgery dental clinic at Busselton
  • Multi-purpose health centre in Eucla
  • $3.8 million to fund the redevelopment of the Centre of Excellence in Aboriginal Primary Health Care and Training for Rural WA.
