Experts have suggested Australian General Practice accreditation may need to broaden its scope, to embrace business models of the future.

A trend towards larger group and multidisciplinary medical centres has forced many practices to adapt already. Industry bodies forecast significant changes in the next edition of the RACGP’s Standards for general practices.

Chair of the National Standing Committee – Standards for General Practices, Dr Mike Civil, says his personal view was that the range of practice models now in existence provided a “challenge for the profession” with regard to accreditation.

Experts say the range of GP models and ideas coming together under the one roof creates a “complex and siloed” environment, making the task of accrediting medical centres or practices as whole facilities difficult.
