The New South Wales Government has announced a $20,000 competition aimed at encouraging the commercial development of apps for smartphones and tablets aimed at improving the health system and patient outcomes.

Minister for Health Jillian Skinner and Minister for Finance and Services Greg Pearce llaunched the apps4nsw collaborative solutions for health competition to find new uses for existing data and statistics.

“We are committed to working with industry and  ICT developers to create new uses for government-held data to benefit the entire community and contribute to our local ICT industry,” Mr Pearce said.

“The competition will help commercial app developers find innovative uses for new health data held by the NSW Government,” he said.

Mr Pearce said winners will be given  government and industry backing to make their products market-ready.

“apps4nsw is an award-winning initiative and previous winners have seen their apps developed into successful products, including Go Play and Demographic Drapes, which are available for download on smartphones and tablets,” Mr Pearce said.

“This competition is part of the NSW Government ICT Strategy 2012, which aims to use ICT to transform service delivery in NSW, making it easier to do business with government.”
