A nurse has been taken into intensive care after being attacked at Toowoomba Hospital.

The 45-year-old male psychiatric nurse was allegedly attacked by a 32-year-old patient about 5pm on Friday.

The nurse had to be resuscitated following the serious assault, but is in a stable condition.

The incident happened just one day after delegates from the Toowoomba Hospital moved a motion requesting 24/7 security for all acute mental health units across Queensland.

“The type of clientele that they’re getting and their behaviours are escalating and there’s been far too many assaults,” Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union regional team leader Queensland Auriel Robinson told reporters.

“We’re asking that it becomes a standard level of security in all acute mental health units across the state.

“Every worker has the right to be able to go to work and go home to their family safely, no matter what area they work in.”

The alleged attacker is also in hospital.

Workplace Health and Safety and police are both investigating.
