Australians are set to reap the benefit of the largest number of GP’s per capita after the Federal Government released figures that show that 1108 graduates are enrolled in the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT), filling all available places.

Federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said that the figures shows the success of the Government’s efforts.

“The Australian Government is improving primary care by boosting the number of GP training places across the country and through the introduction of Medicare Locals to better connect services,” Ms Plibersek said.

The AGPT program is a postgraduate vocational training program required by medical graduates who want to become general practitioners. It is fully funded by the Australian Government. General Practice Education and Training Ltd (GPET) manages the AGPT program on behalf of the Australian Government.
