The South Australian Government has announced that SA Health will undertake a full review of the state’s mental health bed capacity and demand since the implementation of the Stepping Up mental health reforms.

State Minister for Health, Jack Snelling, said he had requested a review into the reforms to ensure that the system is striking the right balance between acute and non-acute mental health beds.

“The vast majority of people who access our mental health services are seen in a timely manner and receive the care they need quickly,” Mr Snelling said.

“But I need to be satisfied that people who access mental health services during the busiest times are still receiving timely support.

“I have spoken to a number of people during my visits to hospitals and emergency departments, including mental health doctors and nurses, who are concerned about the ability to appropriately treat mental health patients during periods of peak demand.”

SA Health will undertake the review over the coming weeks.
