A new $4 million, 15 bed mental health care facility has been opened by Mental Health Minister John Hill in South Australia.

The Southern Intermediate Care Centre, south of Adelaide, aims to provide short stay residential and therapeutic services to those suffering from mental health and substance abuse problems.

The centre is one of four other care centres being developed across South Australia as part of the state government's response to the Social Inclusion Board's Stepping Up report.

“All the ICCs will provide a ‘step up’ service of short-term residential therapeutic support available to people who are becoming unwell, but who do not need to be admitted to an acute mental health facility,” Minister Hill said.

While the Eastern ICC is currently already operational, the southern ICC will be open to its first residents on 28 March.
