The Victorian Government has announced it will deliver $120 million for the state’s hospitals to improve infrastructure and medical equipment.

Premier Denis Napthine announced the first tranche of the scheme, with $60 million being made available for the state’s hospitals as part of the Securing Our Health System 2012-13 Budget initiative.

Dr Napthine announced that a further $60 million will be made available under the program in the forthcoming budget.

“This important program allows our public hospitals to stay at the forefront of new technology and enables them to replace big-ticket items with the latest and most modern equipment and infrastructure available,” Dr Napthine said.

“Modern and fit-for-purpose equipment in our hospitals provides the backbone for our doctors, our nurses and our allied health professionals to do what they do best – help patients.

Some initiatives supported through the first $60 million allocation include:

  • $7.45 million for Alfred Health – 128 slice CT scanner, a digital angiography unit, digital x-ray room and lift upgrades;
  • $4.8 million for Eastern Health – a cardiac catheter laboratory at Box Hill Hospital and PABX phone system at Maroondah Hospital;
  • $3.5 million for Barwon Health – main water pipe system upgrade and x-ray equipment;
  • $543,000 for Echuca Regional Health – boiler replacements; and
  • $330,000 for Moyne Health Services – nurse call communication system.
